This enigma is things like a Salemander can have 40x more DNA than a human, and a human can have the same as a tomato: genome size and organism complexity are uncorrelated.


This was downgraded to an enigma once we found junk DNA: DNA that basically is just cruft/baggage that hasn't gotten cleaned out yet. But we still don't understand what scrubs this stuff -- and why it doesn't get removed in some species but does in others.
