While Brokaw was on NBC (Meet the Press) and was making a ignorant and bigoted barb at Republicans (that they fear having brown grand-babies), and repeating a fallacy/FakeNews (the Mexicans are all Democrats), he accidentally told the truth about Mexicans and all immigrants (they should try to assimilate more), and suffered a shit-storm and was forced to apologize for the latter. The former was the real bigotry and insult to viewers... and ignored by the defenders of virtue.

Details

While appearing on Meet the Press, he was trying to character assassinate the deplorable Republicans by saying they, “don’t want brown grand-babies,” but to try to sound balanced about that insult, he also quipped that “Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.” E.g. it's everyone's fault but lefties.

❝ But the fact is, on the Republican side, a lot of people see the rise of an extraordinary, important, new constituent in American politics, Hispanics, who will come here and all be Democrats. Also, I hear, when I push people a little harder, “Well, I don’t know whether I want brown grandbabies.” I mean, that’s also a part of it. It’s the intermarriage that is going on and the cultures that are conflicting with each other. I also happen to believe that the Hispanics should work harder at assimilation. That’s one of the things I’ve been saying for a long time. You know, they ought not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And that’s going to take outreach on both sides, frankly. ❞

I have mixed race family full of conservatives, my Step Dad is black, I have many cousins that are Mexican, I've never heard any of the family imply "I don't know whether I want brown babies". (They're more concerned they grow up unemployed basement dwelling failures, aka Democrats). In fact, if you compare Texas (Republican) to California (Democrat) you find that there's far more Mexican integration and mixing and success in all phases of the culture in Texas. In California Mexicans are for picking food, cleaning it (or your home) and preparing it. So Tom's slur is as ignorant as it is offensive. (See: Mexican American Descrimination)

There was also the ignorance that the Mexicans all vote democrat. While it's true that uneducated (less educated) people often do vote Democrat, Mexicans are more mixed than the igno-left thinks. While it's hard to tease just Mexicans out of the Latino vote, we know that Bush got 44% of the latino vote, Trump was 29% (and strengthening in polls -- more in red states like Texas/Florida). And the longer they stay here, the more likely they are to grow and learn how radical and offensive the Democrats are. So Tom was wrong, as usual, on his claim that they, "will come here and all be Democrats".

Of course the left doesn't care about that. They only got outraged because he pointed out that creating a culture-within-a-culture (Mexican communities with Spanish as the first language) might be a bad thing for them and the rest of us. The fucking "duh!" heard 'round the world. Of course I want Mexicans to assimilate more (in language) -- it will give their kids more opportunities, and it allows me to experience more of their culture and betters us both. But THAT was offensive to the far left. The real insult and ignorant bigotry? That's fine, because it was just directed at Republicans. The truth directed at any culture that immigrates here? That was offensive to them.

Texas Diversity
We've lived in various places around the nation. Our current residence is in Houston, Texas. Sadly, when I visit or talk with Californians or New Yorkers, or other provincial progressives, they all have an image of themselves and Texas (or Houston) that doesn't really match reality. Especially when it comes to them imagining themselves as diverse, and the South, Texas or Houston as not as much so. In the meantime places like Wallethub (and other polls/studies) are ranking Houston as the #1 most diverse city in the nation, with more Texas cities than any other state ranking in the top 10. It is also far, FAR more "tolerant" than other places I've lived, like L.A. or the Bay Area, or places I went to school like NYC and Chicago.
FakeNews
FakeNewsmen.jpg
While the term goes back 100 years, the history is summed up well in a Sharyl Attkisson TedTalk on FakeNews. While our media has always had false narratives and bad stories that are Fake News (exampled include: Edward R. Murrow's "See it now" McCarthy'ing Joe McCarthy (1954), Richard Jewel story (1996), story about a plane crashing into Camp David after 9/11 (2001), Duke LeCross Rape Case (2014), Michael Brown and 'hands up, don't shoot' narrative (2014), and so on). We didn't use the term "Fake News", just liberal media bias or incompetence, but it's been around since the first liberal got sloppy or partisan at a newspaper, somewhere back in Roman times.

Then on September 13, 2016 Hillary Clinton supporters Google and Eric Schmidt, used a shell charity (a non-profit called "First Draft,") to start seeding the term to attack right wing websites ("to tackle malicious hoaxes and fake news reports"). Hillary Clinton and her surrogate David Brock of Media Matters admitted in a campaign letter that they pressured Facebook to join the effort. Google warned Conservative websites to remove stories that Google didn't like, or they'd take away their ad revenue. And Barack Obama and the liberal media followed along, regurgitating what they were told: none were going to let this opportunity (to curate what information we could see) go to waste, all in the name of protecting free speech. All coincidentally done at the same time, in what could only be a coordinated campaign attack.

Unfortunately for them, it backfired when people noticed that the mainstream liberal media made more errors and was less honest, and started throwing it back in their face. Fake News applied more to the News, Google, Facebook, Obama and other curators and finger pointers than their victims. Donald Trump used that to hijack the term and use it back against them. The left tried to change the narrative and pretend that Trump had created the term, and they wanted to stop using it and claimed it was a hateful term and an attack on free press to point out the Presses bias or errors. And that's where we are today.

Once considered the paragon of a fair Journalist, now a parody of journalism, often reminding people of how partisan and biased he was all along.
